Probably the best value alternative to hotels in Krakow!

Travelling to Krakow

By air:

Thanks to the proliferation of carriers, flying is arguably the best way to travel to Krakow from the UK. There are numerous flights directly to Krakow or to other Polish destinations nearby. Krakow airport (Balice) is currently being substantially enlarged to cope with the growing demand.

The airport is located 15 km (10 miles) from the city centre. Public transport buses (lines number 192 and 208) travel to the city centre. Tickets (2.50 PLN- 30 pence) may be purchased at newsagents or, for a surcharge 0.50zl, from the bus driver. There is an extra charge for luggage.

Taxis are available from outside the terminal, and the fare into the city center is approximately 60 PLN (£10) on weekdays or 80 PLN on weekends and public holidays.

We strongly recommend fast train connection between Balice Airport and Kraków's main railway station. The train stops some 200 meters from the airline terminal; from there you can walk or use the airport shuttle bus, free of charge. The train runs approximately every 40 minutes, the journey takes about 15 minutes, and the tickets (6 PLN - £1.20) can be bought on board.

An alternative is to fly to Katowice, which is only about 50 miles away. Another option is flying via Warsaw. The journey by Intercity train takes about 2.5 hours.

Owing to the popularity of flights to Krakow, particularly those of the low cost airlines we recommend early booking.

Rail:

Krakow is accessible from many regional European cities by rail. Non-stop express trains run throughout the day from Warsaw and take about 2 and half hours to reach Krakow. EuroCity and InterCity trains also arrive from Vienna (7 hours, 30 minutes), Prague (8 hours), Berlin (8 hours, 30 minutes) and Budapest (10 hours) each day. All trains terminate at the Krakow Glowny Station . Taxis are available from in front of the station. The main station is situated conveniently in the very centre of the city, close to the Old Town historic district. The area around the station has recently undergone massive redevelopment with a chic open space and a vast shopping centre to the right.

By road:

If you prefer a more leisurely journey you may drive or take the coach. Driving to Krakow from London takes about 20 hours. You will have to add a few more hours for the coach journey. There are numerous regular coach lines travelling to Krakow from the UK. A bus ticket from London’s Victoria Station to Krakow is probably the cheapest way to get here. Please check Eurolines web site for details. Most buses arrive at the main coach station, located next to the Main Railway Station.

A car will not be of much use to you in Krakow, since most of the Old Town is closed to traffic and distances between major sights are short. Elsewhere in the city, traffic jams are frequent and parking space insufficient (and quite expensive!), therefore an automobile may be a bit of a liability. A car will be useful only if you plan to explore the region; but even then it is a good idea to consider public transport first.
