Eating Out

Whether you are looking for a romantic night out or a snack in a cosy pub, you will find a wide selection of restaurants, pizzerias, coffee houses and bars in Krakow, especially around the Main Square and in Kazimierz. In our opinion those in and around Kazimierz represent much better value than those close to the Old Town Square. Below you will find a selection of our recommendations.

Restaurants:

Polish cuisine:

Wierzynek in the Main Square is Krakow’s most famous and luxurious (as well as admittedly the most expensive) restaurant. Its history goes back to the 14th century. Great food – mainly Polish cuisine. Not to be missed!

Nostalgia, 10 Karmelicka street,  is a cosy restaurant with a tastefully decorated interior, serving traditional Polish cooking. Only minutes from the Main Square. Website: www.nostalgia.krakow.pl

Pierozki U Vincenta is a cosy small restaurant in Kazimierz (the Old Jewish Quarter) serving a wide variety of 'pierogi' - traditional Polish dumplings. The interior is inspired by the creations of Vincent van Gogh.

Chlopskie Jadlo in St Agnieszka Street is a traditional Polish restaurant in peasant style. The main dishes are all traditional Polish favourites. The potato pancakes may well be the best in all of Poland. Highly recommended!

International:

Ariel is a welcoming restaurant in 18 Szeroka Street in Kazimierz. You will find there a fine example of Kazimierz architecture and style. The food is traditional European Jewish cuisine; however it is not kosher.

Balaton is a Hungarian restaurant which has been around for ages and is very popular with the locals. The interior may look a bit outdated, but the food is delicious. Highly recommended.

To try something different try Gruzinskie Chaczapuri which serves Georgian cuisine. Fabulous food and great value. Gruzinskie Chaczapuri is a chain of 4 restaurants in Krakow. We recommend their outlet in 3 Grodzka Street.

Aqua e Wino is an upmarket Italian restaurant in 5/10 Wislna Street. They serve very good authentic Italian food.  Their website address is: http://www.aquaevino.pl/

Cafés:

Both the Old Town Square and Kazimierz are virtually dotted with cafés. Most of them serve very good tea and coffee as well as delicious cakes.

A visit to Jama Michalika in 45 Florianska Street is a must, if only for their fabulous Art Nouveau interior. See their website for their menu. Their sernik (cheesecake) is delicious.

Pod Kogutkiem is a tiny cafe in the old Jewish quarter of Kazimierz (11 Jozefa Street). It is thought to be the smallest café in all Krakow, but they serve probably the best coffee in Krakow.

Singer café/bar is our other recommendation in Kazimierz (22 Estery Street). It has a very nice interior with lots of candles and old mirrors. The tables are made of old sewing machines (hence the name!).

Cafe Mlynek is a gallery, bar and 100% vegetarian cafe in the Kazimierz quarter of Krakow. Their onion soup is exceptional!
